This page will contain information about actual alternatives to traditional employment, although self-employment IS "traditional." Examples will be provided through the stories that women (mainly) and men have told during face-to-face interviews. Sometimes Marjorie Bard has listened to the personal narratives at the many highway Rest Areas where she "hunts" for possible undetectable homeless people. And, sometimes she just finds them at their "jobs." Such self-employment includes craft faires and flea markets, roadside sales of organic vegetables and fruits, and as workers in seasonal orchards. Caretakers for houses and pets, working in national and state parks, and temp sports events jobs are common. When no union is needed, there are always construction and transportation sites that need help. Carpenters travel. There are still carnivals and circuses that cross the country and employ all kinds of labor. There is no limit to employment opportunities since many like taking risks and using one's innate talents to provide a service or hobby. Some people like to travel and have "adventures" while others prefer to remain in one area and retain friendships or participation in such events as chamber music societies. Being "homeless" does not mean revealing everything about one's lifestyle....
In the meantime, do go to http://www.studioclub.com and read the stories of the Undetectable Homeless link on the Home Page. New businesses are increasing out of vehicles every day, and they are very innovative!
There will be interviews, photos, and resources on this Page.
